As per a recent study, the gap between men and women drinking has been closing over the years. The study period that spanned along a decade, between 2002 and 2012, revealed that the percentage of US women who have been drinking in the last month have gone up significantly and so did the average number of days when women were reported drinking, say researchers at National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The percentage of women who who have been recorded drinking in the last one month increased from 45% to 48%. The men, however, reported a slight decrease from 57% to 56%, as per the findings of the research. Even the number of days have increased in the last 30 days from 6.8 to 7.3 days whereas the men experienced a slight decrease, from 9.9 to 9.5 days, as discovered by the researchers, reports Huffington Post.

Aaron White, the senior scientific advisor to the NIAAA director and lead author on the study, said in a statement, "We found that over [the study period], differences in measures such as current drinking, number of drinking days per month, reaching criteria for an alcohol use disorder and driving under the influence of alcohol all narrowed for females and males." He also added, "Males still consume more alcohol, but the differences between men and women are diminishing," as reported NBC News. The evidence that women are consuming more alcohol is concerning because women are susceptible to much higher risk of alcohol-related health conditions than men.

The researchers also revealed that eh disorder related to alcohol rates and the number of cases associated with driving under the influence did not increase for women. In fact, there has been a significant decrease in the percentage of men who met the conditions for alcohol use disorder as compared to women that only decreased slightly, according to Philly.
