LG Display, South Korea company, said that they will be investing over $8.71 Billion, 10 trillion Won, to start a plant that will make panels using OLED (Organic light-emitting diode) panels, making its mark on the ultra-clear display technology industry. The anticipated spend for the plant, called P10, is said to begin at 1.84 trillion won in Paju, South Korea. The panels manufactured in this unit will include the ones for large TV screens and OLED panels for smart watches as well as auto displays. The production in this plant is said to begin in 2018. According to Japan's Nikkei Asian Review, LG Display ventured into the OLED technology in anticipation of Apple Inc. to adopt this new equipment for its handset in 2018. An LG Display spokeswoman declined to comment on this Reuters report.
LG Electronics and its affiliate partner LG Display are both seen investing heavily on the OLED for TVs. In order to make this technology popular in US, LG was seen slashing its prices on the TV sets that are powered with OLED display. So far, LG will be the only player to offer this screen quality. Both Sony and Samsung have opted for LCD screen instead of OLED for their TV panels. However, Panasonic is also said to join LG in support of the technology and will be launching its first OLED TV later this year. However, the company thinks that ut stoo expensive right now. Masahiro Shinada, head of Panasonic's TV arm, said that for the OLED screens to be adapted by the market, it will at least two to three years. Apple is also expected to adopt this technology in 2018. LG admitted to incorporating capacity upgrades with regards to Apple's decision to source a stable vendor for their OLED panels. Even though these are still rumors but the industry knows about the established relationships between the two companies, as reported by The Verge.
