Google to Bring Super Fast Internet Service to Los Angeles
Back in the day, internet providers would have to bend over backwards to gain access to a city for the provision of internet services. They often had to agree to demands such as serving even the poor neighborhoods. However, with Google Fiber and the brand's reputation, turned the tide and made the city governments propose what they can do to be selected by the tech giant for provision of ultra-fast internet. So far, more than 1000 cities are happy to oblige. Los Angeles has been added to the list of 17 other markets where Google Fiber will be providing its high speed internet facility. The announcement was made a day after AT&T revealed that it would offer its super fast broadband internet service to 38 cities and parts of L.A. For L.A. to qualify for Google Fiber, they would have to stick with the company's checklist including permission to parts of the city for network hubs and a single point of contact who will deal with the company, reports LA Times
"With the help of gigabit internet, Chicago and LA can boost their creative cultures with internet speed to match their size," said Jill Szuchmacher, director of Fiber expansion. "Whether it's filmmaking or entrepreneurship or more abundant bandwidth at home, Chicago and LA are the perfect cities to show us what's possible with gigabit internet," says The Verge. Google has created a detailed checklist to help city officials understand what it means to have a "very, very large-scale build going on (within) city limits," Szuchmacher said.
According to Szuchmacher, the planning process can take several months. Chicago is among the other cities that Google Fiber is considering as a potential host. According to a city spokesman, the process is still in its early stages and that Google is already working with mayor's office to work out the general issues, as per Chicago Tribune.
