'Worst' Natural Gas Leak In California Might Still Need Many Months To Fix
One leak found in the natural gas storage facility in California is said to be taking many months to get repaired. At first, the scale of the leak was not gauged well, and the initial efforts to repair it have failed.
A new plan to fix it is on the cards.
Much of the methane gas is not concentrated enough to be harmful, say officials. Moreover, the amount of leakage has been varying every day.
Yet, the scale of the leakage seems to be pretty worrying. While more than 2,000 residents have shifted into temporary shelters, even the FAA has prohibited planes from flying overhead, fearing that sparks from the planes might ignite the gas, according to Time.
Reportedly, the Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) has put in all its efforts to fix the leak. Starting with small-scale local efforts, they chose to dig a new relief well to replace the well with the leak, but they found that their efforts were in vain. Their new plan seems to be efficient though it will take many months to judge its efficacy.
The gas storage facility involved is the Aliso Canyon facility, which is one of many that have been built over old disused oil fields. Oil fields get abandoned once the resource gets exhausted. However, companies like SoCalGas store their natural gas in these reservoirs, which are said to total 300.
