Stowaway Cobra Found In Cargo Ship Sailing For New Jersey
On the MV Maersk cargo hold, a stowaway Indian cobra, Sana, was found. It was 18 inches long and discovered in a cargo hold of the ship sailing for New Jersey from Singapore.
The unexpected passenger was brought to the notice of the U.S. wildlife officials, so that herpetologists, or "reptile experts" from the Wildlife Conservation Society Bronx Zoo, got a call to come and capture it, according to CNN.
Kevin Torregosa and his partner, respondents for the snake, could capture it on the spot where the crew saw it. How it got into the cabin in the first place is not too clear, though.
This guy has got the rather rotten reputation of being one of the snake species that has "inflicted the most snakebites on humans". Not without reason, as it has venom that gets into the synaptic gaps of the nerves that might paralyse the limbs of victims, or lead to cardiac arrest or respiratory failure, according to NBC Chicago.
Called Sana in honor of the cargo ship, no one can say how she got in. But she will be quarantined for a month at the Bronx Zoo, even as there is no word as to whether she will remain there even after the quarantine period..
