Jeremy Carter, Former U.S. President’s Grandson, Dies at 28
The former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, announced while teaching Sunday School class at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia on Sunday that his grandson, Jeremy Carter has passed away, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Carter came to the church two weeks before and said that he is now cancer-free. On his regular Sunday class, he told the Church members that his grandson died a few hours ago. The cause of death is unknown. Former president told the church that Jeremy felt sick on Saturday and that his mother found him dead after he went to their family home in Peachtree City, Georgia to take a nap.
Church member Jill Stuckey told the Journal-Constitution that Jeremy Carter was a "great, fun-loving guy. Life's full of its ups and downs and the Carters aren't immune," the newspaper quoted her as saying, reported People. Carter announced earlier this month that he is now cancer free and reportedly talking openly about the family's loss. "I'm not surprised," church member Jan Williams told the newspaper. "That's the kind of Christian he is. Everything that happens in life, good or bad, he uses as a teaching experience. He lives his life as a lesson for other people to see."
"[Carter's] decision to come teach Sunday school is indicative of his character, how important this church is to him, teaching is to him," the church's Pastor, Jeremy Shoulta, told the Journal-Constitution. "The past few months have been a very emotional time for this church. There have been moments of great joy, of sadness, of grief. The church has done all it can to lift the Carters up during this difficult time." He also told CNN that the family tried CPR "trying to keep his heart going" before he died.
