Newly-hired 911 Dispatcher In Utah Helps Woman Deliver Baby on Highway

Barely two weeks on his job, a 911 rookie dispatcher just faced a rather challenging test in his probationary period skipping the usual newbie's honeymoon stage at a job.

William Kalaher, a 911 local newhire from Utah, became an instant real-life hero for helping a couple deliver their baby safely in their car while in a highway (I-15) on December 18.

Shay Allred was racing towards the Salt Lake City hospital as fast as he could when his wife Kristin started feeling contractions at around 1am on December 18.

The couple never landed at the hospital as they calculated. Instead, Kristin felt she needed to start pushing the baby out.

"We were really close [to the hospital]; I just felt like I needed to start pushing. From when we started talking to 911, within a minute I had given birth," told Kristin as quoted saying by ABC News.

This prompted her husband Shay to seek a badly needed help by contacting 911. And that fateful call was routed to William Kallaher who admitted that he wasn't completely familiar with 911 operational procedures as he was still two weeks on his job.

"It's crazy how quickly your training takes over," said Kalaher as mentioned by Tech Times.

Nevertheless, the rookie just simply followed what he was trained for with help from his training manual.

As Kalaher walked Shay through some birthing steps, they noticed the baby was not crying while making her way out to the real world. They later found out that the umbilical cord was coiled around the baby's fragile neck.

Even under intense pressure, the rookie had the father followed his instructions carefully over the phone.

"As soon as we had cleaned off the mouth and nose, and got the airway open... [she] cried with her whole heart!," recalled Kalaher as mentioned by Good4Utah.
