Scientists Discover a Hormone Pill That Motivates You to Work Out

Are you one of those who need a lot of motivation to get the exercise machines? Do you need a lot of convincing yourself to hit the gym? If yes, then this might be what you are looking for. Scientists claim that a new medicine, which regulates certain hormones, can motivate you to work out.

There are innumerable diet pills available in the market which promise to curb appetite but the new pill makes you want to work harder instead.

The pill is a product of the finding by researchers from the University of Zurich in Switzerland who discovered that with the elevation of a certain hormone in the brain, mice were motivated to run faster.

Researchers further said that the hormone erythropoietin (Epo) has positive effects on the body, without increasing the count of red blood cells at the same time. This medicine could be very helpful for people suffering from Alzheimer's or obesity, who need a lot of physical activities.

"Here we show that Epo increases the motivation to exercise. Most probably, Epo has a general effect on a person's mood and might be used in patients suffering from depression and related diseases," Mail Online quoted team researcher Max Gassmann as saying.

For the study, researchers observed 3 different groups of mice. One group was left untreated, another group was injected with human Epo, and the third group was treated to produce Epo like human beings. The results conveyed that the two groups with Epo in their brain ran faster than the untreated group.

"If you can't put exercise in a pill, then maybe you can put the motivation to exercise in a pill instead," said Dr Gerald Weissmann, Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal.

"As more and more people become overweight and obese, we must attack the problem from all angles. Maybe the day will come when gyms are as easily found as fast food restaurants," he added.

The study was published online in The FASEB Journal.
