Trader Joe’s Recalls Raw Cashew Pieces due to Salmonella Risk
Trader Joe's has recalled "Trader Joe's Raw Cashew Pieces" over potential salmonella contamination. The company issued the notice on its website Friday after being notified by its supplier, Heritage International, about the risks involved.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also issued a news release. In the release, the FDA stated that one lot of the cashew pieces tested positive for Salmonella. All of the other lots that were tested did not have signs of the bacteria.
According to the notice, the product involved with the recall has this specific lot code: "BEST BEFORE 07.17.2016TF4," and a barcode number of 00505154. All of the Trader Joe's Raw Cashew Pieces with this lot code and barcode number have been removed from the stores and sales have been suspended as the company investigates the situation.
So far, no one has reported falling ill after eating the cashew pieces. Consumers who purchased this specific product are advised to either throw it away or return it at any Trader Joe's location for a full refund. People should not eat the cashew pieces.
The product was sent to locations from 30 states, which include: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and in Washington D.C.

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Illnesses typically last from four to seven days and the majority of the patients can recover on their own.
