Will Apple play catch-up again with its completion and incorporate wireless charging in its next charging? New reports suggest the company is making moves in that direction but might steal show from other manufacturers by making devices that can be charged from a distance.

According to Mac Rumors, Apple is 'exploring' technologies that would help powering devices when placed away from the power source. Apple's competition is offering wireless charging that requires users to place their phones on charging mats. Distancing the phone would increase the charging time but offers benefits of convenience. With its technology trials, Apple is said to be working to overcome the loss of power over distance.

The technology could be deployed in future devices coming out as early as next year. However, this year's phone has not been spared of the speculation. When news broke that Apple is working on wireless charging technologies, some reports connected such efforts to the company's purported plans to drop the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Without the jack, the Lightning port would have to be shared between headphones use and charging. Wireless charging would allow simultaneous use of both functions.

Bloomberg, which first reported Apple's wireless charging, pointed out that Apple uses induction to charge its Watch when placed less than an inch away from power source. A patent filed in 2010 depicted a technology that allowed wireless charging of handheld devices when placed within the vicinity of iMac.
