Cancer rates in China continue to be very high, a new report found.

According to data collected in 2015, there were 2.8 million deaths due to cancer - about 7,500 deaths per day. There were also about 4.2 million new cancer cases (nearly 12,000 new diagnoses per day) with lung cancer being the most common.

"Cancer incidence and mortality have been increasing in China, making cancer the leading cause of death since 2010 and a major public health problem in the country," the researchers wrote reported by Medical Daily.

For this report, the team of researchers from the American Cancer Society, University of Sydney in Australia and the National Cancer Center Beijing examined death rates taken from 72 Chinese cancer registries to estimate the 2015 mortality rate in China. The team also examined data gathered from 2009 through to 2011 to further analyze the burden of cancer.

"Almost 22 percent of global new cancer cases and close to 27 percent of global cancer deaths occur in China," wrote the researchers. "More importantly, the cancer profile in China is markedly different from those of developed countries."

The researchers found that the four most common forms of cancers in China are lung, liver, stomach and esophageal cancer. These cancers make up 57 percent of all diagnosed cases, which is significantly higher than other countries. In the U.S., lung, liver, stomach and esophageal cancers make up 18 percent of all diagnosed cancer cases.

Despite the cancer rates, the researchers did have positive news to report. They found that since 2006, death rates fell drastically by 21.4 percent per year for men and by 21.1 percent per year for women. The researchers believed that death rates would continue to plummet if more people adopted healthier lifestyles, such as giving up cigarettes.

The study was published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
