Contact Lenses Can Work Just Like Computer Screens
Contact lenses can even become computer screens, thanks to an unusual research by scientists at the University of South Australia, according to Phys.org.
The research team has used a polymer film that is coated with the skill to conduct electricity. Hence, the contact lenses are primed to receive electronic prompts, similar to a computer screen.
"We're talking about anything from a simple sensor that can measure the amount of glucose in your blood through to actually creating electronic displays, so rather than having something like a pair of glasses that's acting like a computer, you can actually generate images directly on your contact lens," said Drew Evans, associate professor at the University of South Australia.
This "proof of concept" is being harnessed by Evans and the team. After testing it, the team will collaborate with a manufacturer and start complete production.
"We have always known that our film coating technologies had the potential for many applications and now we have taken that a step further by proving that we can make biocompatible, conducting polymers at the nanoscale and grow them directly on a contact lens," Evans said.
The study has been published in Dec. 23,2015 issue of ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.
