If you Feel Sleepy All the Time, you are not the Only One, Says CDC Sleep Survey
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a sleep survey of all the 50 states and the District of Columbia has just been published. According to the findings of the survey, more than third of American adults don't get recommended seven-plus hours of sleep everyday.
The survey broke down the sleep survey based on marital status, age, sex and other such parameters. Overall, as per the random telephonic survey conducted with 444,306 respondents, at least 65% reported a healthy sleep schedule of over seven hours on a regular basis. However, 35% reported less than that.
The research also pointed out that unemployment and or inability to work impact the sleeping patterns in a negative way. This fact is consistent with previous research done on quality of sleep and issues like mental health that are associated with unemployment. It also showed that the people who had college degrees or higher slept better.
Some racial and ethnic groups were more sleep-deprived than anyone else, including blacks and multiracial people. Another aspect that was set to have a positive effect on sleeping patterns was marriage, as reported by Myrtle Beach Online
According to American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society, the minimum sleep recommended for every one is at least seven hours at night. They say that less sleep is associated with a risk of many health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart condition, stroke and mental distress.
However, there are many studies out there that challenge the seven-hour sleep figure, saying if it is actually the number of hours you need every night. A study conducted last year involving old age people in the remote villages, albeit with modern-lifestyle, found that they slept close to 6-hours each night and did not report any health related concerns due to that, Star-telegram reports
