Medical health services in England have been underfunded for far too long that has led to "thousands of tragic and unnecessary deaths," a report said Monday. The review, setup by NHS England with the help of an independent health taskforce, revealed that as many as £1 Billion funding was required by 2020-21 to provide adequate care to additional 1 million people. "Mental health services have been underfunded for decades and too many people have received no help at all, leading to hundreds of thousands of lives put on hold or ruined," wrote taskforce chairman Paul Farmer, the chief executive of mental health charity Mind.

According to the study, mental disorders were "widespread, at times disabling, yet often hidden". The study also said that one in four adults is diagnosed with at least one mental health problem and that mental disorder accounts for "the largest single cause of disability in the UK". Even though there has been recent expansion of psychological therapies, the report said that NHS England only provided care to 15% adults, as reported by Yahoo News.

The study findings have been incorporated by the health care providers and ministers who have promised to offer treatment over 1 million people by 2020. The extra funds required to make this possible will be accommodated from £8.4bn the government has already pledged to the health services in this Parliament.

It is a serious issue that the cases of low self-esteem, depression and suicide have been at a steady rise in the gay community. According to a recent survey, 24% gay men have admittedly tried to kill themselves with 54% suffering from suicidal thoughts, as reported by Pink News

Prime Minister David Cameron said the plan would help put "mental and physical healthcare on an equal footing".

He said he wanted to see all those that were struggling to "get the help and support" they needed.
