Keeping A Cell Phone In The Pocket Or Talking Through It For Over An Hour A Day Could Reduce Sperm Count

If you are a male, you need to make a decision. Would you like to sacrifice your cell phone, or would you like to give up your sperms?

In a new study by a team of researchers led by Professor Martha Dirnfeld of Technion University in Haifa, it was found that the male who carries his mobile phone in his pocket is lowering his overall sperm count.

Testing more than 100 men over a year, researchers gave the men descriptive questionnaires to understand their lifestyle. They found that 47 percent of the men who kept their phones in their front pants pocket showed lower sperm levels, compared to 11 percent of the general population.

Moreover, those who spoke for longer than an hour a day also doubled their chances of showing low sperm quality compared to others who spoke sparingly.

Due to the thermal effects of the cell phone, the temperature of the testicles could go up and "cook" the sperm.

"The sperm levels were down to a number that would make conception difficult," said Dirnfeld, according to the Telegraph. "If you are trying for a baby and it doesn't happen within a year, you might want to think of whether it could be your mobile phone habit that is to blame."

Hence, men who want to father babies need to bring down the overall usage of their cell phones, and keep them about 20 inches from their groin.

The findings are published in the Journal of Reproductive BioMedicine.
