3-5 Pegs a Week Improves Heart Health, Says Study

According to a new research, alcohol is a good thing for your heart when it is consumed in moderation. The study also discovered that the people who drink wine, beer or any other liquor are less likely to have a heart attack or a heart failure than those who never drink.

So far as you can limit your intake between 3-5 drinks, it can actually be good for your heart, said the researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The study looked into the link between alcohol and heart failure. The researchers followed 60,665 participants who did not report ant heart failure instances at that time. Out of these participants, 1588 of them went through heart failure during the study period, which ended in 2008. The participants that never drank any alcohol or rarely drank had a higher risk of a heart problem, says Independent

The researchers revealed the more often participants drank alcohol in moderation, the lower is their risk of heart failure, said the researchers. Those who consumed more than five times a month had 21% reduced risk compared to those who didn't drink at all or drank less.

58,827 participants were enrolled in the heart attack study and were categorized by how much they drank and how often. Around 2,966 participants underwent AMI between 1995 and 2008. As per the analysis, for every additional drink, the risk of AMI was reduced by 28%.

Researchers said it doesn't matter what type of alcohol was consumed. "It is primarily the alcohol that leads to more good cholesterol, among other things. But alcohol can also cause higher blood pressure. So it is best to drink moderate amounts relatively often," said Imre Janszky from NTNU. The findings were published in the International Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Internal Medicine, as reported by Hindustan Times
