Florida Burmese Python Hunters Capture 106 Snakes
This year, Florida hunters managed to capture 106 snakes by the end of 2015's month-long Burmese Python hunt, according to the Associated Press reported. One of the snakes caught measured 15 feet long.
The hunt has tried to get rid of these Burmese Pythons, as they are not part of the wetlands in Florida. They originally belong to Southeast Asia.
There were over a 1,000 people who were part of the hunt this year. The search went on from Jan. 16 to Feb. 14. Most of the hunters were originally from 29 states, according to the Daily Mail reported.
After analysing their stomachs, the snakes will be sent to their destinations. One-third of the snakes will be converted into wallets, handbags, shoes and belts. Each snake captured will be sold for $150.
"We are excited to see so many people contribute to this important effort to conserve Florida's natural treasure, the Everglades ecosystem. We need to keep this momentum going now that the competition is over," Wildlife Conservation Commissioner Ron Bergeron said.
