Scott Kelly Up for Another Year in Space
Scott Kelly from US is all set to return back to Earth next after almost completing a year in orbit aboard the international space station. He says that the first thing he will do when he is back, is to jump into a pool and dine at a real table.
However, despite living in harsh environment, he says he could live another year in space, Space Alabama reports
"Yeah, I could go another 100 days. I could go another year if I had to," Kelly assured reporters Thursday in a video news conference from orbit. "It would just depend on what I was doing and if it made sense, although I do look forward to getting home here next week."
Kelly says, a year without water makes hygiene difficult. He said, "It's kind of like I've been in the woods camping for a year."
But the toughest thing about being in space to live apart from your loved ones, a situation that will make tougher for the astronauts that will be sent to Mars.
By the time Kelly rides the Russian capsule for his landing in Kazakhstan, his mission would have already been 340 days long. The world record of a single spaceflight that lasted for 438 days was set by Russian cosmonaut in 1990s. But even that will fail in the face of Mars expedition that is expected to last for at least 2-3 years in a single round trip, says My Tech Bits
Scott Kelly's experience will help scientists learn and make the Mars mission possible in the next two decades. Kelly will be made to go through medical and physical tests upon his landing. He will then be sent home to Houston for some more tests. After that, it will be weeks or months of recovering from effects of zero gravity that includes loss of muscle and bone, as well as degraded vision, reported Science Today
