Men Hooked to Beer, Women Prefer Wine
People have one favorite beverage they would go for, at any given time. In U.S., for men its beer while wine does the magic for women and the elderly, a recent poll showed.
According to the annual Gallup poll, like the findings of the previous years, wine drinkers are mostly from East Coast and beer lovers live in the Midwest.
Nearly 66 percent of Americans admit to consuming alcohol while 44 percent say they drank at least one alcoholic beverage a week.
The poll results revealed that 12 percent consumed eight or more drinks over the past week and 22 percent said they sometimes drink too much.
Moderate alcohol consumption as defined under the government guidelines is one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. However, as per the survey the average number of drinks consumed in a week was 4.2.
Another revelation of the poll was that compared to the statistics of last year, there is a considerable increase in the number of excessive drinkers. However, it was consistence with the figures of the past decade.
Among U.S. drinkers, it was found that while 39 percent of them most often drink beer, 35 percent said they drank wine and 22 percent said they preferred liquor.
Wine was found to be preferred by more than half of the women in U.S. (52 percent), while only 20 percent men said they preferred wine.
Among the elderly, wine was found to be the favorite drink for 59 percent of older women aged 50 years and above while just 28 percent of the elderly men said the same.
In conclusion, the poll results revealed that while beer is preferred by those between the age group of 18 and 54, adults aged 55 and older opt for wine.
The poll was conducted via telephone and surveyed 1,014 adults nationwide between July 9-12, with a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points for the total sample of national adults, and plus or minus five percentage points for adult drinkers, Medical Xpress reported.
