Although the "Big Bang Theory" still dominates the TV ratings, its creators are reportedly mulling a prequel series starring Dr.  Sheldon Cooper. The show said to be the brainchild of "Big Bang" co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, will supposedly focus on the life of a young Dr. Cooper. 

Insiders who are privy to the project revealed that its creation was inspired by "Malcolm In The Middle," as it features a teenage version of Cooper. Aside from Parsons, who will also executive produce the show, no other cast member of the original series will be part of the upcoming series.

"Big Bang Theory" producer Warner Bros. and CBS have so far refused to comment on the Sheldon prequel series, which allegedly has a large penalty attached to it. Sources disclosed the comedy show will be shot in a single-camera format and not in the multi-camera style that has been utilized by its precursor.

It is worth noting that the "Big Bang" spinoff is now in its 10th season, which is a testament to its popularity among viewers. The series remains a favorite among the 18 to 49 adult demographic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 

The development of the prequel may not have come as too much of a surprise to followers of the top-rating comedy show. Its highly successful 10-season run contained many references to Sheldon's childhood, particularly his growing up years as the son of a religious mother. 

The "Big Bang Theory" prequel series, which stars a younger Sheldon, could possibly involve Laurie Metcalf who portrays Sheldon's mom Mary Cooper. And with Sheldon's history, writers of the spinoff would have a lot of materials to work with. 

Deadline noted that "Big Bang" is among the highly-successful comedy shows that haven't pursued spinoffs. For instance, "Friends" spawned the series "Joey," while "Cheers" gave birth to "Frazier." 

Among the hit CBS show contemporaries, only ABC's Modern Family actively explored a follow through program. Therefore, producing a "Big Bang Theory" Sheldon prequel series might just be a viable decision on the part of its creators.
