Sony has released two PS4 versions this year: the PS4 Pro and the PS4 Slim. To the average user, they look almost the same and have the same PS4 branding, however, they are a lot different in processing power and specs. Here's a look at what has changed:

Design

The PS4 Slim indeed is slim, as it has a smaller profile than the original PS4. The PS4 Pro however, is larger than the PS4. While the PS4 weighed at 2.8 kilograms, the PS4 Slim weighs just 2.1 kilograms while the Pro weighs 3.3 kilograms.

The new consoles, just like the old one, are returning with Blu-ray optical drives that are also DVD compatible. The Pro and the Slim also comes with the USB 3.1 ports v/s the USB 3.0 ports in the original, with the Pro having an extra folding to add an extra USB port.

The Pro's new USB port would be beneficial for anyone who wants to connect a VR, and it also upgrades HDMI 1.4 in the original PS4 to 2.0 to run games at 4K. The new consoles also get better WiFi performance and an upgraded Bluetooth from v2.1 to v4.0.

Performance

The PS4 Pro obviously is the more powerful console than the other two, the PS4 and the PS4 Slim. While the Slim aims at getting more efficient while delivering movies and games, the Pro has other ideas. Each of the consoles has the following hardware specs:

PS4 - CPU: 1.6GHz 8-core AMD Jaguar; 1.84 TFLOP AMD Radeon (18CU, 800MHz); 8GB GDDR5 RAM

PS4 Slim - CPU: 1.6GHz 8-core AMD Jaguar; 1.84 TFLOP AMD Radeon (18CU, 800MHz); 8GB GDDR5 RAM

PS4 Pro - CPU: 2.1GHz 8-core AMD Jaguar; GPU: 4.2 TFLOP AMD Radeon (36CU, 911MHz); 8GB GDDR5 + 1GB RAM

As a result of faster CPU, the Pro delivers 30% more CPU and a 100% increase, and equipped with an extra 1GB of RAM is reserved for non-gaming purposes, so that the entire 8GB RAM can be available in gaming.

The PS4 Pro supports 4K, while the others only support up to 1080p. The consoles also have an HDR upgrade. The Pro, as a result of more performance, also draws more power at 310W compared to the 250W of the PS4 and the meek 165W of the Slim.

Price

The Pro is priced at $400 for the 1TB version, while the PS4 Slim and the PS4 costs the same at $300 with the Slim coming at two options, a 500GB and a 1TB option.

The PS4 Pro is the best middle generation console, as it beats out even the XBOX One S in terms of sheer firepower.
