Constipation May Lead To Kidney Disease, New Study Finds
A new study confirms that there is a link between constipation and kidney disease. Health records from more than 3.5 million US Veterans were examined by the researchers. It was searched whether these veterans reported constipation or had used lixiviates since seven years.
It was concluded that those who had experienced constipation were at a high risk of developing chronic kidney disease or may be kidney failure.
The researchers also concluded that server the participant's constipation the higher are the chances of developing the risk of such kidney conditions.
The members of the research team said that they were not surprised as previous studies have linked constipation to cardiovascular disease.
They suspected that the mechanism through which cardiovascular system is negatively affected by constipation might affect the kidneys as well.
This link is associated with the gut bacteria. It is a fact that constipation is the maker of an altered gut micro biome. A community of microbe's lives in the human gut and these are linked to various metabolic changes like increased inflammation.
The researchers admitted that they were not aware of the exact mechanism connecting constipation and kidney disease. They presumed that changes in gut bacteria may cause constipation and these changes may cause the food to pass through the digestive system more slowly. This slowing down of food may cause inflammation which may later contribute to kidney disease.
About 30 percent people are affected by constipation in their lifetime. There are possibilities that elderly people and women are affected more.
Physicians can treat constipation through methods other than laxatives. These may include probiotics or a fiber rich diet because laxatives may lead to dehydration which is a link between constipation and kidney disease.
According to foxnews the limitation of this research is that 93 percent of the participants were males and their average age was 60 years. So it cannot be said that the same effect might be seen in other population.
