WhatsApp Adds Fully-Encrypted Video Calling Service After Checking On Security Measures To Cope The Trump Administration
The Billion user social networking platform, Facebook's WhatsApp finally encrypted video calling to its messaging app on Monday following steps to make sure of keeping out potential threats of the restricted Trump Administration.
End-to-End Encryption on WhatsApp
WhatsApp, early this year, adopted end-to-end encryption early this year, which made it technically impossible for the company and government agencies to get access to their user data.
On Monday WhatsApp added the new video calling service which will allow users to make video calls without having to worry if someone is having an ear on their conversations. However, WhatsApp will still have access to user's list of contacts.
Jan Koum the cofounder of WhatsApp said in an interview that video calls will be rolled out to 180 countries within hours after the feature is introduced at an event in India.
Customer-Centered Social App
Koum from his headquarters in California also added "We obviously try to be in tune with what our users want. We're obsessed with making sure that voice and video work well even on low-end phones."
He also expressed that improvements in smartphone cameras, battery life and network bandwidth has made it possible to bring video-calling features viable for a large proportion of WhatsApp users, even if they are not using high-end flagship devices.
Massive Customer Base
Though the video calling service is not something new on the market with already existing Apple's FaceTime video calls to iPhone users and Microsoft's Skype on multiple platforms, WhatsApp is built for a massive customer base that is already fully into the app. It is also to be noted that the company has been continuously adding more features from what began as a simple messaging app.
Some Attractive Features
"In terms of security and privacy, what people care about the most is the privacy of their messages," Koum said. The video calling service is well integrated and has some interesting options. Users can move around the thumbnail video showing what the other person sees and switch to checking texts or email simultaneously on a video call.
Koum also expressed that WhatsApp has always remained committed to security, especially after the U.S. election of Donald Trump as president-elect last week, which heightened fears of increased surveillance on tech companies.
