Xbox is celebrating 15 years of its gaming excellence. The word X was derived from Direct-X; it is the main API of Microsoft for gaming.

Parent Herald reports that Microsoft had entered into the console market before getting the name Xbox. This name has emerged from 35 different names that were suggested by the Microsoft's developers.

Few of the notable names that need a mention are Entertainment Headquarters (EHQ), Three Six Zero (TSO), Microsoft Interactive Network Device (MIND), Microsoft Entertainment Technology or Theatre (MET) and Optimal Ozone or Optical Odyssey (O2).

Going by the actual details the Xbox console was introduced on November 15, 2001. In fact, this console was set out to compete with Nintendo S4, and PlayStation 2.

Halo was developed by Bungie which became Xbox's flagship game. This game eventually became one among the most successful FPS series in the industry.

In 2002 Microsoft introduced Xbox- live with at least 150,000 subscribers during the first week. Another Xbox was released in November 2005 which was named as Xbox 360 it was supposed to compete with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

The Xbox 360 encountered a fatal error Red Ring of Death which made this console useless. Despite this error, the Xbox 360 sold 39 million units till 2010. In this year Microsoft redesigned the console while introducing the Kinect System. This Kinect helped in boosting the sales of Xbox 360 to 75 million till the end of 2012.

In the year 2013 Xbox One was introduced. This console had to face controversies like digital rights management and privacy practices. The Xbox one required a continuous internet connection, it had a limit of up to 10 family members and the resale of this console was prohibited. Microsoft changed its policy and eventually allowed this console to run without the Kinect.

Presently Xbox is the pillar of the gaming industry. Nintendo which is considered as the father of gaming industry is always ready to support and acknowledge Xbox.
