'Star Wars' Lucasfilm Chief Keen On Having Female Director For Series
"Star Wars" Lucasfilm chief, Kathleen Kennedy said that the franchise is looking forward to working with a female director for the series. She expressed that she was committed to continuing to populate the "Star Wars" franchise with diverse faces, both in front of and behind the camera. Finding a female director is her top priority, Kennedy told Variety.
"We want to make sure that when we bring a female director in to do 'Star Wars,' they're set up for success. They're gigantic films, and you can't come into them with essentially no experience," said Kennedy.
The Lucasfilm boss shared the fact that only 12 percent of the biggest box office hits last year were overseen by women directors. She said that because there haven't been many opportunities for women directors to direct big movies, the Lucasfilm team is committed to identifying top notch women directors to work within the series.
Kennedy said the team of "Star Wars" wants to really start to focus in on people they would love to work with and see what kinds of things they're doing to progress up the ladder now, and then pull them in when the time is right.
However, it might be quite a while before a female director can helm a "Star Wars" project since the directing jobs for all of "Star Wars" current projects have already been announced. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the first in a series of stand-alone "Star Wars" features is directed by Gareth Edwards, slated for a release on Dec. 14. Rian Johnson is reported to be involved with the post production of Han Solo movie and Colin Trevorrow is said to be waiting in line to start "Star Wars: Episode IX."
According to CinemaBlend, a film has been planned for 2020 but there has been no revelation or announcement of the director, which might be the very first Lucasfilm to have a female director on board to helm "Star Wars" series.
