A Royal Mess: Kate Middleton Caught Topless

By S.C. Stringfellow | Update Date: Sep 18, 2012 10:42 AM EDT

Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge has been caught with her pants down---and not to mention top off.

The newly inaugurated princess was photographed  nude by French tabloid magazine Closer  and more recently, can be seen in Italian sensationalist quarterly Chi, despite an agreement between the French tabloid and lawyers representing the outraged couple to not share the revealing photos with any other publication.

The photos depict Kate sunbathing topless on a balcony at a 19th century hunting lodge in southern France, in early September.

The pictures are hazy, indicating the photographer was miles away from the royal couple and had to zoom, too close, to get the indecent shots.

In one photo, Middleton is seen removing her bikini top; in another, she's seen rubbing suntan lotion on Will's back. In another, William rubs suntan lotion on her almost-bare bottom. Closer also said Kate was spotted smoking a cigarette as the couple walked out of nearby Marseille airport where they arrived on a commercial flight, though no photos accompany the information.

The depictions, which have since sparked outrage among the British media moguls, refuse to reprint them in national periodicals and, since the spread, statements made from St. James Palace  condemn the photos as 'saddening' and a 'grotesque' invasion of privacy, evening claiming the incident brings back memories of royal icon Princess Diana:

"The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the duke and duchess for being so. Their Royal Highness had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them."

According to the BBC, the couple learned about the photos while in Malaysia and is considering the possibility of bringing a lawsuit against the photographers or the magazine.

The Huffington Post reports, the couples lawyer, Aurelien Hamelle, told the court that he is seeking (EURO)5,000 ($6,550) in damages from Closer and an injunction forcing the magazine to stop publication elsewhere, including on the Internet.

He also asked the court, according to the source, to fine Closer (EURO)10,000 ($13,100) a day for each day the injunction is not respected, and (EURO)100,000 ($131,000) if the photos are sold in France or abroad.

Celebrity privacy is almost an oxymoron, however the royal family, who do not live for the entertainment of others, should be particularly protected from the onslaught of paparazzi. Though they are a necessary evil, celeb-photoogs should be mindful of the physical and emotional pain of those they harass.

There is some things that the public just shouldn't see, no matter how curious we are about our favorite T.V. radio and royal icons.
