NFL Latest News & Updates: San Francisco 49ers Shakeup May See Colin Kaepernick Staying

The San Francisco 49ers just started a major shake-up, firing general manager Trent Baalke and coach Chip Kelly recently. Team owner Jed York is looking for changes and all that may just convince Colin Kaepernick to stay put.

The 29-year-old quarterback has had a colorful year with the 49ers, jostling for the starting quarterback spot with Blaine Gabbert. Kaepernick lost the slot due to injuries and poor play but has been showing semblances of his old self in recent games. That said, a change at the helm could convince Kaepernick to see what direction new management will bring. But one thing that may turn off the next general manager or coach would be his hefty price tag.

If he stays, Kaepernick will be owed $14.5 million which may be too much, Niners Wire reported. This is considering that the 49ers have a ton of picks to choose from in the coming 2017 NFL draft. They have 11 picks at their disposal, a privilege where they can use to select or trade off for needed talent. If so, this could make Kaepernick as the last option.

Had Baalke and Kelly stayed on, the consensus was seeing Kaepernick walk next season. The 49ers are expected to avoid the $14.5 million contract he holds, citing his latest performances as probably not worth the cost. His poor showing is however blamed in part to the Baalke-Kelly partnership. Though Kelly wants to keep him, the fact is Kaepernick’s career was declining under the 53-year-old mentor’s watch, SF Gate reported.

So that dismissal is a big development that changes the future of Kaepernick and the 49ers. Given the chance, Kaepernick could be an asset to teams in need of a talented quarterback. But he can only do that if he is fielded in and not kept on the bench, doing crazy stuff such as kneeling when the national anthem is played.
