NES Classic Edition News & Update: Hackers Modify Nintendo’s Game Console To Add More Fan-Favorite Games
The most sought-after game console of Nintendo today, the NES Classic Edition, is much-loved by everyone, although it is often out of stock and only has 30 retro games. However, as the tech giant didn't give any details if players can add new titles, some hackers from Japan and Russia do the work and revealed that they can add new games for the unit.
Although these hackers way are not legal, they revealed a video tutorial how they have possible add more titles making NES Classic Edition's loaded with a total of 60 games. This includes the fan-favorite "Battletoads," "River City Ransom" and the original "Mega Man." From the looks of it, one doesn't have to bare open the game console as they would only need a wire to connect to a PC to make it possible.
According to CNET, a video guide by a Russian hacker named madmonkey revealed that one only needs a micro-USB cable, a PC, patience if there would be malware and guts to disregard the law. It has been known that downloading copies of Nintendo's games online is strictly prohibited, thus one has to do this with a lot of precautions. This is also restricted even if the NES Classic Edition players have their own original cartridges.
On Reddit NesClassicMods community, on the other hand, it revealed that the hack won't work until the modifiers created a save file in "Super Mario Bros" first slot. One this is done, they can now connect their NES Classic Edition to the PC using the micro-USB cable and the booth the unit under FEL mode. This could be done by pressing down the game console's reset button while holding down the power button from a "powered-off state," Ars Technica noted.
While booting, the modifier should run the sunxi-FEL mode on the computer. The next step warns players to operate at their own risk as this would need to copy their NES Classic Editions's internal information to the computer. After this, they can modify and add their files using the application made by the hackers. For the open-source version of compatible USBBoot, click here.
