What makes "Yuri On Ice" an instant hit with viewers is its believable storyline. As it turns out, the plot for the Japanese sports anime television series is not the only thing that is realistic. "Yuri On Ice" protagonist, Yuri Katsuki, is based on not one, but two real-life Japanese figure skaters.

While other anime series has mythical creatures and superpowers, "Yuri On Ice" deals with events and experiences that happens in real-life. The concept is too real that even the show's protagonist was made with real people in mind. A figure skater fan posted on Tumblr back in October of last year, revealing the uncanny resemblance of Yuri Katsuki to Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu. Not only do they look identical, they both idolizes Russian figure skaters.

Yuri Katsuki worships Victor Nikiforov, which was based on Yuzuro Hanyu's real-life idol, Evgeni Plushenko. Although their link as an anime character and a real-life figure skater is interesting, this is as far as their connection go. As for Yuri Katsuki's life and career, it is based to another Japanese figure skater Tatsuki Machida. Just like in "Yuri On Ice," Tatsuki Machida also finished last in his very first Grand Prix Final, he was 23 years old like Yuri Katsuki.

The young figure skater then had a chance to compete in the World Championships, but failed to bag the gold medal. Tatsuki Machida also had low self-esteem and made a lot of sacrifices to achieve his goal. Yuri Katsuki's connection with real-life Japanese figure skaters and his loser moments make him relatable and lovable. With him only bagging the silver medal in "Yuri On ice" Season 1 Episode 12, many believed that his story is still not done.

Considering the huge success of the first season, many believed that "Yuri On Ice" Season 2 may already be a done deal. The creator of the show, Mitsuro Kubo, has already showed interest in creating a sequel, but has yet to comment on the official release date.
