In today’s time, it’s very natural for pregnant women to eat fish as it is known to be a good source of nutrients that are good for the body. This is even advised by doctors just as long as the fish is low in mercury content. However, it was never really clearly stated which fish is high and low in mercury so pregnant women may be consuming the wrong kinds of fish.

According to reports, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have already released a formal fish guide that clearly states which is good for consumption not only by pregnant women but also for those who are still breastfeeding babies. The two agency recommends everyone to consume at least two servings of fish with low mercury content every week.

And finally, a list of high-mercury fish has already been released and this includes shark, orange roughy, swordfish, marlin, bigeye tuna, and even king mackerel while low mercury fish includes cod, salmon, tilapia and shrimp. The mercury levels of the fish mentioned are all calculated using information from FDA and other related sources.

Today, groceries and other retailers are strongly encouraged to inform their consumers about the kinds of fish they sell. Posting a reference chart based on the studies of FDA and EPA will make sure they not only buy the right fish but also keep their babies healthy. Research shows about 50 percent of women today are not consuming the right amount of fish each week. Fish is known to have good content of healthy fat and protein which is very good for a person’s body especially pregnant women.

The complete report of FDA and EPA can be viewed on their website, which not only explains what recommended amount fish a pregnant women must consume is but also for those who are not.
