Fans have been long waiting for George R.R. Martin to release the sixth novel, "The Winds of Winter," from its "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series. The 68-year-old author has missed a lot of deadlines, thus his friends, who co-authored the encyclopedia and history book "A World of Ice and Fire," revealed the reasons for the delays.

According to his friends Elio García and Linda Antonsson, "The Winds of Winter" is affected by George R.R. Martin's writing style and behavior. In an interview with The Guardian in 2011, the novelist revealed that there are two types of writers, "the architects and the gardeners." The architects are planning everything that he wants to write before he starts while the gardeners dig a hole, plant a seed and wait for it to grow.

George R.R. Martin described himself as a gardener. He perfectly knows what he will write but as the story progresses, he is not sure how many more branches it will build that he has to explore. This exactly is what happening when he is writing "The Winds of Winter." The second one is his way of avoiding outlines.

Whenever he writers, George R.R. Martin is not using outlines. According to Insider, this is his way to building new characters. If he uses an outline, he will find himself losing his motivation to write a full novel that is already predicted. Although often delayed, he gave his fans a glimpse of hope when he revealed that "The Winds of Winter" might be revealed this 2017.

On his blog post, one of his followers asked him for any updates about "The Winds of Winter." Although he said that it is not yet done, he revealed that he already made progress though it is not as advanced as he hoped for a year ago. George R.R. Martin thought he could finish the book by now, but it is not the case. However, he teased that it might be out this year, even if it is the same statement he said in 2016, The Telegraph reported.
