NBA Latest News & Update: Magic Johnson Returns To Direct The Los Angeles Lakers

By Vaughn Dweebs | Update Date: Feb 03, 2017 08:50 AM EST

Earvin “Magic” Johnson is back in the Los Angeles Lakers fold, serving as adviser in an effort to help co-owner Jeanie Buss. The former Los Angeles Lakers guard returns to the same team where he previously held an honorary vice president role and shares which he eventually sold to Dr. Patrick Soon in 2011.

The announcement hardly comes as a surprise considering both Magic Johnson and Jeanie Buss were spotted in January having dinner at a restaurant inside the Staples Center, ESPN reported. Johnson initially explained that the meeting was no different and that he has had previous dinners with the Lakers president in the past.

Most of course didn’t buy into the claims of Magic Johnson and all that has been made official. The NBA Hall of Famer added that he turned down offers from different teams because he has ‘always been a Laker’. Johnson added that he could have been part-owner of several teams such as the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks (before Phil Jackson came on board) and the Detroit Pistons, per an interview via NBA.com.

Magic Johnson says he has already buckled down to work. That includes meeting up with Mitch Kupchak to discuss the direction of the franchise. From the looks of it, Kupchak will be staying on though the role of Jim Buss is up in the air. Jeanie Buss is apparently holding Jim to his previous word of stepping down if the Los Angeles Lakers are unable to be a contender within three to four years. Jim said this back in 2014.

First-year head coach Luke Walton is excited with the coming of Johnson, singling out how the 57-year-old great is one of the best in the game – not to mention a certified champion. Magic Johnsons says he is willing to get down with the young guards like D’Angelo Russell, provided Walton wants it. The answer to that is an obvious yes.
