NFL 2017 Latest News & Update: Oakland Raiders Keeping Jack Del Rio Until 2020

The bad news is that the Oakland Raiders have torn up Jack Del Rio’s old contract. However, that was a prelude to something bigger, a longer and presumably longer pact that will keep the head coach until 2020. The move is seen as a form of reward for Del Rio’s efforts that saw the team finish last season with an impressive 12-4 win-loss card.

Del Rio is only in his second season with the Oakland Raiders. But team owner Mark Davis seems impressed enough to keep him for a longer run. Jack Del Rio made a name for himself with high-risk moves. The kicker is that they did pay off, earning him the moniker “Black Jack Del Rio”. Proof of this was that game-winning two-point conversion gamble against the New Orleans Saints in the Raiders’ season-opening match, NFL.com reported.

Del Rio previously handled the Jacksonville Jaguars until his dismissal in 2011. He initially served as defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos before he was given the call by the Raiders to head coach again. His first year as Raiders coach saw him lead the team to 7-9. While most may see that as a poor start, it was, in fact, an improvement compared to the win-loss records the past years for Oakland.

Before Del Rio, the Raiders were 3-13 under Dennis Allen. Tony Sparano took over on an interim basis following a 0-4 start before Del Rio took over. The 12-4 mark also saw the Raiders make their first playoff appearance since 2002. That effort saw Del Rio finish fourth in the NFL Coach of the Year race behind eventual winner Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys.

Seen as a player’s coach, Jack Del Rio is expected to aim higher next season. Derek Carr and Khalil Mack admit that Del Rio rejuvenated their hunger for the game, something that may unsurprisingly show the same with the other members of the Oakland Raiders, ESPN reported.
