Suicide Attempts Decline Due To Same-Sex Marriage; Will Donald Trump Allow It

By Mary Perry | Update Date: Feb 23, 2017 06:32 AM EST

New reports suggest that same-sex marriage can help prevent the numbers of suicide mishaps. However, many are curious if newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump will allow it,

A recent report from Live Science unveiled that laws and countries which permit same-sex marriage has fewer reports of suicide killings. The publications indicated that same-sex marriage can actually reduce the rate of teenagers who attempt suicide. Yet, Donald Trump will be the one to decide whether or not he will still allow it in the U.S.

Can Suicide Attempts Be Reduced By A Same-Sex Marriage Policy?

The report was based on the national survey of 800,000 United States teenagers, wherein 230,000 were gay, bisexual and lesbian. Researchers found out that before same-sex marriage was permitted, there was a total of 28.5 percent high school students who were identified as sexual minorities, who admitted that they have attempted suicide.

However, the percentage of suicide attempts from high school students amicably decreased in the past year because of the implementation of same-sex marriage. Statistics claimed that it decreased a total of 4 percent.

Researchers believed that same-sex marriage policies can also reduce the stigma perception among teens. Julia Raifman, the lead study author and an epidemiology researcher from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said that stigma is one of the reasons why many teenagers who are identified as lesbian, gay, and bisexual commit suicide. Implementation of such policy in other countries that still do not allow same-sex marriage could see the results from the studies and examined date from 1999 to 2015.

Mark L. Hatzenbuehler, who is an associate professor of the sociomedical sciences at Columbia University also stated his opinion/ He thinks that the lives of people who are gay, bisexual and lesbian are also important.

Greater Attention For This Population: Will Donald Trump Do The Same?

"The legal climate surrounding this population therefore deserves greater attention among medical professionals dedicated to reducing sexual orientation disparities in suicidality among adolescents," Hatzenbuehler said.

On the other hand, The Los Angeles Times suggested that Donald Trump might not sign the order of legalizing broad discrimination against the LGBT community. The draft will reportedly allow “any organization, including closely held for-profit corporations”

Same-sex marriage can be kept under the ruling of the new U.S. President, Donald Trump. Same-sex partners may be able to keep their marriages under his new administration, but these unions might not mean much, in case the federal government erodes the rights and benefits afforded to that marriage status.
