Should Yogurt Be Considered As A Superfood?
Superfoods are starting to make it in the food industry as most consumers would opt to shop smart and prefer the ones that are beneficial to their health. One of the most nutrient-rich foods that are often underrated is Greek yogurt, which is a perfect substitute for sour cream.
Yogurts are made of whole milk but have a higher saturated fat, which is said to be beneficial to an individual's health. Yogurt is said to decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases. A regular 100-gram Greek yogurt comes with 100 calories and no fat, as mentioned by CNN.
Greek yogurt, in general, is packed with protein but has limited to no amount of sugar. Most lactose-intolerant individuals would usually opt for Greek yogurt as their system can process it. It also works wonders for the bones as yogurt is filled with Vitamin D, thus it is often given to people over 50.
Aside from its low-fat, high-protein content, yogurts are also filled with good bacteria which is essential for the digestive system. It has probiotics which are known as a "good bacteria that keeps the stomach health, protecting the body from experiencing irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel syndrome, and diarrhea."
''Adequate nutrition plays a major role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, and the micronutrients of greatest importance are calcium and vitamin D,'' Jeri Nieves, Ph.D., MS, director of bone density testing at New York's Helen Hayes Hospital told WebMD during an interview.
Yogurt also works wonders for the skin as most women would use it as a facial mask. Health explains that yogurt is infused with lactic acid which is often the primary ingredient in beauty products, especially facial masks and body lotions.
Eating yogurt may seem promising because of its countless health benefits, but dietitians warn that an individual should be keen on choosing the healthier option. It's been advised that some yogurts, especially that one with "fruits at the bottom" can potentially do more harm than good as it is loaded with sugar.
