Makers of Quorn Meat Free Mince has announced a recall of a batch of its frozen product over fears it may contain pieces of metal. The Food Standards Agency said that the product was only sold at Tesco and has warned customers not to eat it and return it to the store for a full refund.

The Frozen Quorn Meat Free Mince weighs 300g and carries the data code 136331 and has a best before end dates of August 31, 2018. An estimated 12,000 packs of the mycoprotein are believed to be affected by the recall. The vegetarian brand Quorn Foods Ltd had been endorsed by Olympic gold medalist Mo Farah last year.

Telegraph reported that no other batches or Quorn Foods products are known to be affected according to FSA. No other packs of Frozen Quorn Mince weighing 300g beyond the 12,000 under recall and no other Quorn products are affected as well.

"This immediate recall is a precautionary measure once we became aware that the single batch in question may contain small pieces of metal resulting from an isolated production issue," Quorn said in a statement.

They pointed out that the recall is limited to Tesco stores only and any products purchased prior to February 27, 2017 are not affected. The recall was confirmed on Feb. 28, 2017.

Sheffield Telegraph reported that Quorn made it clear that the safety and wellbeing of their customers is their number one priority, which is why they immediately instigated the recall as soon as they became aware of the issue.

According to Medscape symptoms of foreign body ingestion or swallowing a piece of metal include discomfort in the neck or throat areas, difficulty swallowing, drooling, and difficulty breathing. If the metal is trapped in the stomach or small intestine, patients may present with vomiting, abdominal pain and fever.

According to Drugs.com, the mechanical removal of the object by means of the endoscopy procedure, or through the use of a balloon catheter, is the primary treatment modality.
