Conor McGregor has traded barbs with Floyd Mayweather Jr. for over two years and it now seems likely that the fight will happen. All it takes, according to Mayweather is for McGregor to sign the fight deal.

How It All Started

According to Fox Sports, the verbal tussle between the two fighters started when Mayweather made Ronda Rousey and Conor Mcgregor of the UFC as examples of how racist it still is in the world of sports. McGregor took offense at this but reports went around and Mayweather eventually admitted to spreading it so the fight will happen.

So Why Is It Not Happening Yet?

Over the course of 2016, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have escalated the word war. They had been calling each other out on social media and in interviews; one of which has Mayweather offering Conor McGregor $50 million so the megafight will happen.

McGregor acquiring a boxing license in the state of California also fueled expectations more that the fight will happen soon. But it turns out Mayweather only wants the fight in Las Vegas, where Conor McGregor has issues with the Nevada Athletic Commission regarding a ruling on the sanctions meted on him and the UFC after an altercation at a pre-fight conference.

Mayweather is also insinuating that the reason Conor McGregor cannot commit to the fight is because he isn't the boss of UFC. Mayweather said that while he can commit to it because he is the boss of his own company, Conor McGregor is tied to what the UFC wants him to do. The former pound-for-pound king says he would only come out of retirement for a megafight with Connor McGregor which can eclipse the record of the bout with Manny Pacquiao.

Will It Happen Sometime This Year?

Now reports are floating around that the camps are already close to coming to terms and have pegged the fight happening in June (via The Sun).
