'Iron Fist' News & Update: Netflix Series Receives Bad Reviews from Critics; Star Finn Jones Says It's 'For Fans'
Nowadays, it seems tricky for Hollywood to represent any culture other than its own. Take "Ghost in the Shell," which cast Scarlett Johansson in a role clearly meant for an Asian actor. The same happened with Marvel's "Doctor Strange," which was also accused of white-washing and cultural inappropriation. Speaking of cultural inappropriation, the latest to fall into that trap is Netflix's "Iron Fist," which received bad reviews from critics. Star Finn Jones says it's "for fans" instead, being quick to defend the show.
"Iron Fist" Star Explains About His Show
According to Comicbook, Finn Jones explained to Metro that the show was "not made for critics" and instead was made for fans of the comic books. He even promised that both fans of Marvel and Netflix will definitely enjoy the show once it debuts this Friday, Mar. 17.
As star Finn Jones said, it's "for fans" instead, does this mean that the show may alienate Netflix viewers who aren't familiar with "Iron Fist?"
Over at Polygon, Susana Polo called the show "laughably bad" because of its "basic screenwriting problems." She cited conversations between characters as being so mundane and self-explanatory, except for Danny Rand himself, who can't seem to express to audiences his inner thoughts. Variety called the show "frustrating and ferociously boring," thanks to its lackluster action scenes and flat characters.
"Iron Fist" Bad Reviews; Why Did Netflix Allow This?
As the Netflix series receives bad reviews from critics, it's actually a surprise that the streaming service has greenlighted a bad project. The Hollywood Reporter called it a "major disappointment that suffers from storytelling issues," something that the show can hopefully address if it gets a second season.
"Iron Fist" debuts on Netflix this Friday, Mar. 17. It stars Finn Jones as Danny Rand, Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing, David Wenham as Harold Meachum, Jessica Stroup as Joy Meachum, Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum, and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.
