“The Belko Experiment” will hit the US box office on Mar. 17, 2017. The upcoming horror flick is the latest project from "Guardians of the Galaxy" director, James Gunn. Here are the details you need to know about "The Belko Experiment."

"The Belko Experiment" Plot

According to Gunn's Facebook post, "The Belko Experiment" follows a group of white-collar employees at a non-profit organization in Bogota, Colombia. During an ordinary day at work, the workers heard a weird announcement from the intercom. This mysterious voice revealed that they will participate in a deadly social experiment.

In the trailer, that same person ordered them to kill a certain number of their co-workers or they will face the consequences. The voice said he and his team will trigger the chip implanted at the back of the heads. As a result, the Belko employees must do everything to get out alive.

The Cast

"Scandal" actor, Tony Goldwyn leads the pool of actors. He plays the role of Barry Norris, the company executive, who also got trapped inside the vicinity, along with the others. Joining Goldwyn are John Gallagher Jr., John C. McGinley, and Melonie Diaz.

Gunn's previous collaborators will also star in the movie. His brother, Sean Gunn will take the role of a cafeteria worker. Michael Rooker from the Marvel movie will play as Bud Melks, Belko's head of maintenance.

"The Belko Experiment" Review

Based on the trailer, it seems that film is a hybrid of "The Office" and "Battle Royale." The film offers a new kind of horror but this time it is set inside a workplace. However, the flick only got mixed reviews from critics.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 47% rotten mark, with an average rating of 5.3 out of 10. "The Belko Experiment" also got a score of 38 from Metacritic.

Variety writer, Dennis Harvey is aware that it might not be a good movie. He thinks that "as a self-aware guilty pleasure, it does give it a playful squeeze." Meanwhile, New York Magazine's Emily Yoshida thinks otherwise. She added the idea of "ultraviolence meets corporate banality" will never be a fresh topic for a flick.

Gunn wrote and produced the script for "Wolf Creek" director, Greg McLean's film project. Moreover, MGM and BH Tilt headed the production with a $5 million budget. "The Belko Experiment" premieres this weekend.
