Columbia Pictures has finally relented. Spider-Man's alien tormentor, Venom, will finally get to have his story told in the big screen. The studio will release the "Venom" movie in the latter part of 2018 as a result of other studios' announcement of their own release dates.
"Venom" has long been in the pre-production stages but did not have a release date. Variety reports that the Sony Pictures subsidiary has placed its release date to October 5, 2018. Columbia made the decision to release the still-untitled Venom movie as a result of Warner Bros.' move to transfer "Aquaman" to December. "Aquaman" will try to fill in the Warner Bros. holiday movie void because of post-production delays in "Avatar 2".
"Venom" is still searching for a director. The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that Jeff Pinkner, who happens to have worked on an another Spider-Man movie, has developed a draft with Scott Rosenberg. Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach have been tapped to produce "Venom".
Venom is a favorite hero-villain among Spider-Man followers. Venom's character is described as an alien that needs a human host to survive. It would be interesting to find out which comic book interpretation the film will follow with regards to Venom's origin as it has varied depending who the illustrator of the series is.
Sony Pictures is now starting to take advantage of their license of the Marvel characters. They were in the planning stages of developing a Sinister Six film but the disappointing box-office performance of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" made them rethink their strategy.
Venom's character first appeared on the big screen in "Spider-man 3" that starred Tobey Maguire in 2007. Topher Grace played Venom and his symbiote Eddie Brock. This Spider-Man movie was the most successful of the franchise with Tobey Maguire as the titular character. A fourth installment was shelved after the studio was more in favor of rebooting the Spider-Man universe instead.
