9-Year-Old Mexican Girl Gives Birth
A nine year old girl in Mexico gave birth to a daughter last week. The girl was only eight years old when she became pregnant.
According to Sky News, it appears that the father is 17 years old, and authorities in the southern Jalisco state have identified him. However, that information has not been particularly helpful, since authorities have not located the man. The mother of the girl, identified by the press only as Dafne, said to the media that he ran away.
The new baby was born on January 27, weighing 2.7 kilograms, or 5.7 pounds. The pair was discharged over the weekend. Both appear to be healthy, though the hospital says that they will be performing extensive follow-up because the mother is so young. It is not clear whether that follow-up will include psychological care.
Police are handling the situation as a rape or child sexual abuse case. The details still remain unclear since the father is currently at large. The police say that they still need the father's side of the story.
It is not clear what will happen to the child and her child following the birth.
Sadly, Dafne is not even close to be the youngest mother ever recorded. According to the British outlet Mirror, the youngest mother in the world was named Lina Medina, a Peruvian child. She was five years old when she gave birth via caesarean section to her son Gerardo in 1939, who was named after the doctor. She appeared to suffer from a condition that made her undergo puberty precociously, receiving her first period at age two and a half, according to the Telegraph. Gerardo's father was never conclusively identified; doctors were not even sure that she herself understood the circumstances of her pregnancy.
