You're about to go out with a hot date, but you had Indian for lunch and your mouth just absolutely reeks of garlic. So what can you do?  Chug some milk and make sure you're armed with a glass of dairy when you take on your next garlicky dish.

New research published in the Journal of Food Science, reveals that drinking milk while eating garlic-heavy foods can eliminate the stinky breath people get when eating garlic.

If you're watching your calories, there's no need to fret.  Researchers from the department of Food Science and Technology at The Ohio State University found that both fat-free and whole milk lowered the concentration of "volatile odor-emitting compounds from garlic in the nose and mouth".

However, because of its higher fat content, whole milk was found to be more effective than skim milk at getting rid of the foul garlic smell.

Researchers found that while drinking milk after eating a garlic-infused meal can still eliminate bad breath, drinking milk during the meal with produce better results.

Eating garlic gives people a mouthful of killer breath because it contains a high amount of sulfur compounds that are responsible for the characteristic odor and flavor of garlic. However, researchers say that people shouldn't give up eating garlic all together.  The plant is an excellent source of magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and selenium and is found to have many great health benefits.
