Lena Dunham Shares Her Teen Anxiety Story
The multi-talented and award-winning star talked about her experience in having mental health issues as a teenager. Dunham revealed that she suffered teen anxiety and OCD in the past.
However, Dunham said that there is a huge drawback from having these disorders. She added that she also has dissociative anxiety.
In the video from People, Dunham expressed how she surpassed this stage in her life. Her parents, Carroll Dunham and Laurie Simmons, helped her throughout the whole process. She said that their open-mindedness was important for her journey.
Lena Dunham Shares How She Overcame Her Mental Health Problems
According to her, the younger generation should not be ashamed in asking their parents or any person for help. She was just lucky enough that her parents are comfortable in dealing with issues like these.
Dunham also stressed out that they are not alone in the journey. However, one should acknowledge that this is a normal occurrence all around the world. She added, “And to understand that I’m not alone that there are so many other kids like me who are suffering this way and the greatest thing I can do for them and myself is to be honest.”
Teen Anxiety: What Experts Think
The study shows that there is an alarming rate of people experiencing anxiety in both teens and adults. As of now, almost half of the entire number of US citizens have mental health issues, of which 10 percent are teenagers.
DoSomething.org reported two-thirds of adults did not undergo treatments but the teens have the worst end of the statistics. According to the outlet, only 1 out of 5 teenagers have access to treatments.
Lena Dunham takes part in the ongoing #MyYoungerSelf project for the Child Mind Institute. The organization just started a 30-day long campaign for the mental health awareness month.
