Heart Disease Not Always Caused By Smoking Cigarettes; Smoker May Be Immune To Coronary Heart Disease

So far, it has been known that smoking may cause heart disease. Cigarette smoking accounts for around one-fifth of cases of coronary heart condition, which is considered as one of the leading causes of death worldwide (approximately 1.6 million deaths worldwide every year).

But in truth, how smoking leads one to suffer from a coronary heart condition is still not clear to researchers. However, some recent studies show that some heavy smokers may be immune to smoking-related heart disease.

More Number Of Smokers Are Immune To Smoking Related Coronary Heart Condition

According to a report published by Express, a new research conducted by a team of researchers have discovered that there are a good number of people who are actually immune to smoking-related coronary heart condition. This is because the researchers have noted that their copy of their gene works in a different way and hence not affected by smoking.

“Our findings suggest that interventions to inhibit this enzyme would be particularly beneficial for smokers, and they may also prove useful for anyone at heightened risk of coronary heart condition,” Dr. Muredach P Reilly, MD, Department of Cardiology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons said.

Smoking Promotes The Production ADAMTS7

The researchers have pooled generic data on over 140,000 people and analyzed 45 small regions of the genome that were earlier associated with a heightened risk of coronary heart disease. They have found a molecule that may at least partly explain the connection between smoking and coronary heart disease. Their findings are recently published in the Circulation-named journal.

The aforementioned molecule termed ADAMTS7 that get automatically produced in the linings of blood vessels. Their studies are showing that when ADAMTS7 is produced in excess, it enhances the build-up of fatty plaque in coronary arteries that lead to coronary heart disease. They have found that smoking boosts ADAMTS7 production, as reported by News Wise.
