Depression Dads Can Affect Their Kids, Family
Knowledge about depression among men, especially dads and fathers is still scarce compared to their female counterparts. Researchers found out the effects of a father's anxiety to his own family, Science Daily reported.
Children will experience the drawbacks in terms of internalizing and externalizing behaviors. They might immediately learn about it since men are more "showy" when it comes to heightened emotions.
The scientist said, "Internalizing behaviors include high levels of withdrawal, anxiety and depressed mood. Externalizing behaviors are directed outward and are associated with heightened anger and aggression."
Recent studies showed that depression tops the list of mental health disorders and it affects both genders. Twenty percent of the US citizens have been struggling throughout their lives, while some have their own yearly episodes.
Various groups and institutions have been working on campaigns for mental health awareness nowadays. BYU football player, Tanner Mangum revealed his own battle and this indeed a huge development in shedding light on these issues.
Professor Kevin Shafer said, "We need men to understand that if they are depressed, its OK to get help. It will benefit them, their families and their communities."
