Texas Mom Delivers Two Sets of Identical Twin Boys within Minutes, Beats 1 in 70M Odds
Tressa Montalvo, a 36-year-old woman from Texas, got a very rare one-in-70-million type of delivery this Valentine's day when she delivered two sets of identical twin boys.
The announcement came Monday from the Woman's Hospital of Texas, where the babies were delivered via C-section. The babies were born within minutes of each other, with Ace and Blaine being born at 8:51 a.m. weighing little over 3 lbs, while Cash and Dylan were born at 8:52 a.m. weighing 2 lbs., 15 oz., and 3 lbs., 6 oz.
"We tried to stick to the A-B-C-D theme when naming them. We didn't expect it, we were trying for just one and we were blessed with four," said Tressa, in a news release from the hospital.
Tressa's physicians had told her just after 10 weeks of pregnancy that she would be delivering a set of identical twins. However, it was on a subsequent visit that doctors caught a third heartbeat and suspected that there was another set of twins in her womb. The two sets of boys had two different placentas.
"We couldn't have been more surprised when Dr. Kirshon told us we were having four babies and that they were two sets of twins. We were trying for one little brother or sister for our two-and-a-half year old son, Memphis," said Manuel Montalvo, Jr., father of the children.
"No fertility drugs were used. We planned the pregnancy-I guess we just succeeded a little too much!" said Tressa.
Although Montalvo's family will be busy with five boys, their parents aren't done yet, as they will be trying for another kid soon.
"We want a girl," said Manuel.
Recent research has shown that identical twins don't have identical genetic material and that there are subtle differences in the DNA of identical babies.
