Cosmetic Products Causing More Health Concerns, Could You Still Be Using Some Of Them

A new study affirmed that health issues related to cosmetic products have increased twofold from 2015 to 2016. This was recently published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. Most of the complaints came from hair care products.

Complaints On Cosmetic Products

According to CNN, Northwestern University researchers analyzed complaints from the Food and Drug Administration from 2004 to 2016. The data came from the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition's Adverse Event Reporting System. This allowed consumers or health care professionals to submit complaints about any damage caused by the so-called products.

The study revealed that there were 706 related adverse events from 2015 and 1,591 in 2016. The average number of reports included in the 12-year study period proves a 78% increase in 2015 and a 300% increase in 2016. According to Dr. Steve Xu, lead author of the study, the number of dangerous health events is greater and more data still needs to be collected.

Issue On WEN Products

NPR reports that the the big jump on complaints were on hair loss and skin irritation associated with WEN by Chaz Dean Cleansing Conditioners. In 2014, the FDA said that it was looking into WEN products.

Meanwhile, the FDA had gotten only 127 complaints about these products by that time, the manufacturer had received about 21,000 complaints, according to the FDA. Unluckily, the manufacturers are not legally obliged to divulge adverse events to the FDA. Now, this prompted the FDA to ask the public to give their complaints about WEN conditioners directly to the agency.

Most of the complaints from 2016 according to Xu, were a direct result of that call to action. The agency also welcomes reports on problems with other personal care products through its online MedWatch system.

Did you have the same experience from using the above mentioned product or with any other hair care product?
