About 38,000 pounds of pork sausage have now been recalled by the Smithfield Packing Company due to the presence of pieces of plastic, likely from gloves, according to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The affected products are 1-lb. chubs of "Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll" with a use-by date of Mar. 12, 2013 and cases containing chubs of "Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll" with a case code of 78533109741, FSIS said. The agency said that the company found that the product was contaminated when it received complaints from two consumers.  

"We received two notifications from customers regarding the presence of glove-like particles in the sausage product.  While there have been no reports of injury associated with this material, as a precautionary measure Gwaltney immediately reported it to the USDA and has issued a voluntary recall," said Dennis Pittman, director of corporate communications, in a news statement from Gwaltney Foods.

The products were sold in 11 states that included Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. FSIS has said that there haven't been any injuries.

Recently, Kellogg Company announced that it is recalling its Special K Red Berries cereal boxes due to the presence of glass particles.

Earlier in January this year, Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) had found traces of horsemeat in beef products sold at various outlets across Ireland. Similar recalls have been issued in many countries including Britain, France, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany.
