What is AI Anxiety and How to Deal With It

By Dynne C. | Update Date: Nov 15, 2023 12:51 AM EST

Developments in AI have been increasingly rapid over the past year. Because of this, the media could not stop talking about it, and for some, this might sound alarming. With abilities like passing a medical licensing exam and outperforming average human originality tests, it is no surprise that several feel threatened and anxious about it.

Psychologist Dr. Elaine Ryan, who focuses on anxiety-related conditions, explained that as humans, we do not handle change very well. Whenever we see some changes, we feel the need to plan and mitigate the risks of all possible scenarios. This reflex is heightened in people with anxiety, so the unpredictability, especially in job security, caused by AI results in anxious behavior. Here's what you can do to deal with AI-induced anxiety.

1. Accept that AI is part of our lives now

Every time there is a new technology, the opinions of people become divided. Mobile phones and social media were not easily embraced by everyone in the beginning. However, these developments are here to stay. Keep in mind that AI has already been in use for some time, but it is only now that it is everywhere in the media.

2. Be open to new career paths

Gone are the days when most people see it as a hard rule to stay with the degree or career that they started with. With the development of AI in the workplace, it is necessary to keep developing human and interpersonal skills that AI cannot replace. Be open to this possibility, and if you are feeling anxious, think about your passions and how you can turn one of them into a career.

3. Take a break from the digital world

Take a break from the digital world and go outside into the real world. Over the years, studies have found reducing screen time improves a person's mood and well-being.
