The Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Sleep Divorce

Sleep is an essential part of a person's overall well-being, which is why it consumes about one-third of the day. It resets a person's energy level, and several studies over the past few years say that it is an important tool in preventing depression and anxiety

However, a less discussed topic around the science of sleep is the effect of sleeping next to another person, which may not be ideal for everyone. Sometimes, no matter how much you love a person, sleeping in the same bed may not be the answer to saving your relationship.

Sleep divorce, or "sleep separation" as psychologist Susan Albers prefers to call it, is a decision that a couple takes to sleep in different beds, in different rooms, or any alternative form of similar sleeping arrangement.

Advantages of sleep divorce

But couples are supposed to sleep next to each other, why would anyone want a sleep divorce? In a study, people are naturally either early birds or night owls. And if partners do not belong to the same group, then it could be disruptive to sleep, which means their mental health will be at risk, as well as their relationship.

Aside from having different sleep patterns, individuals can also get into their own space, like reading or meditating privately before bed. They could also choose the kind of mattress, pillows and blankets they like - this only strengthens the relationship since there are fewer things to fight about.

Disadvantages of sleep divorce

On the other hand, having a sleep divorce may not be the best solution for all couples, especially those in relationships with a lot of unresolved issues. Instead of addressing them, the distance that a sleep divorce creates might cause more problems since it decreases the quality of time spent together. It also underscores any intimacy issues that are already present and could lead to one or both partners becoming lonely and resentful.
